Dallas police officer kills 26-year-old man after entering wrong apartment believing it was her own

The unnamed officer wasn't hurt in the 10 p.m. shooting at the South Side Flats at 1210 S. Lamar St., just blocks from Dallas police headquarters in the Cedars.

The officer mistakenly entered the apartment after finishing her shift before shooting Botham Shem Jean, the resident, according to Dallas police. Hall said the officer is white, but she didn't say whether investigators believe race was a factor in the shooting.

Renee Hall told reporters during a Friday news conference that authorities are seeking an arrest warrant for the officer on a charge of manslaughter, pending approval from prosecutors.

"At the very early stages of this investigation - initial indications were that they were what we consider circumstances of an officer-involved shooting". The last time they spoke, on Wednesday, they talked about politics, work and church, she said.

The victim was identified as Botham Shem Jean, 26, FOX 4 News reported. She told WBAP that she could not understand on the officer got inside the wrong unit.

He was also the nephew of Mr Ignatius Jean, Chief Executive Officer of the Caribbean Water and Sewerage Association Inc. The university said he frequently led worship and chapel services on campus. The officer, a five-year veteran who has not yet been publicly identified, has been placed on administrative leave, authorities said.

Jean had worked as a risk assurance associate in PwC's Dallas office since July 2016, according to his LinkedIn page. She called dispatch to report that she had shot a man, and she later told the officers who responded to the call that she believed the victim's apartment was her own when she entered it. "However, as we continued this investigation it became clear that we were dealing with what appears to be a much different and very unique situation".

"The ball is in their court", Hall said during a criminal justice panel Saturday afternoon.

She said emergency responders had arrived within four minutes of being called, and Jean was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Allison also revealed that she was visiting NY when she received a call informing her that Botham had been killed in his own apartment.

The officer's blood was drawn to be tested for drugs and alcohol.

"This is a bad tragedy", the company said in a statement".

"We still have a lot to do in this investigation", Mitchell said, adding it would be conducted jointly with the Dallas County District Attorney's office. Allison said she didn't want to judge the woman who killed her son, but that the police department's vague explanations left her grappling for clarity and comfort.

Allison Jean, who has held government posts in St. Lucia, where she lives and where her son grew up, said her son's death "just feels like a nightmare".
