He accused Democrats and Puerto Rican officials of driving up the death toll by adding deaths due to "any reason, like old age", contending "they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths" when he left after a post-storms visit.

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to the GOP majority Thursday calling for the panel to request documents from the White House relating to the Puerto Rico response.

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora wasn't a big fan of President Donald Trump's comments Thursday about Puerto Rico.

Gutierrez says, "Even though the president dropped the ball he is now doing a victory dance in the end zone".

Ricardo Rossello, Puerto Rico's governor who aligns with Republicans, said: "It is time to remember all those who lost their lives". They then compared this baseline to the actual number of deaths, and voila! "3000 people did not die", he wrote.

He also said that "the victims nor the people of Puerto Rico deserve to have their pain questioned".

George Washington University researchers are standing by their study that found the death toll following Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico was 2,975, considerably higher than first thought.

He claimed that the death count during last year's disaster has been overblown with one clear goal in mind - to discredit him as Hurricane Florence is reaching mainland US's East Coast. "Donald Trump today desecrated the thousands of Puerto Ricans who died in Hurricane Maria", he said.

The Wisconsin Republican says he has "no reason to dispute" a study that found almost 3,000 people on the island died from Hurricane Maria a year ago. And New Orleans was far more accessible than the mountainous island of Puerto Rico. "Before, during, and after the two massive hurricanes, the President directed the entire Administration to provide unprecedented support to Puerto Rico".

Puerto Rico's government is run by the New Progressive party, a pro-statehood, Puerto Rico-only party.

"To be tweeting about 3,000 people and being efficient, it's actually disrespectful for my country", Cora said.

Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority leader, said Trump owed an apology to the 3,000 families for "the shameful attack on deceased fellow Americans".

Trump on Thursday rejected the official death toll in Puerto Rico from the September 2017 storm, tweeting "3000 people did not die".

"Among all the deaths that occurred, which of them were related to Maria, which of them would not have occurred if it hadn't been for the storm?"

"Simply put: delusional, paranoid, and unhinged from any sense of reality. I think the president is in a position to find out why that is and I hope he can report the reason", said Sen.

"Damn it: this is NOT about politics this was always about SAVING LIVES".

State and local officials are responsible for establishing death tolls, not the federal government.

When a reporter asked Trump about Maria in the Oval Office, he swiftly unleashed a fact-challenged defense of his response to the hurricane.

Trump told confidants the media were underplaying the challenging circumstances in Puerto Rico and trying to exploit the storm to attack him. A study published in 2014, nearly a full decade after the hurricane left huge swaths of New Orleans flooded and hospitals without power, attributed 1,170 deaths to Hurricane Katrina - 184 more than a widely cited 2008 study on the subject, thanks to new availability of autopsy data. "It's an isolated island that lost its infrastructure and power for a long time, you couldn't get to people for a long time", Ryan said.
