The swearing-in will allow Kavanaugh to be seated on the court immediately. Susan Collins, R-Maine, that she planned to vote in support of the controversial Kavanaugh. Joe Manchin of West Virginia was the only Democrat to vote in favor of confirmation.

The only party dissenters were Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, who had meant to vote no, and Democrat Joe Manchin, who voted yes. Steve Daines, who supports Kavanaugh but is attending his daughter's wedding Saturday.

Anticipating Kavanaugh's confirmation, some groups have explored the impeachment process for removing him from the high court.

Speaking on the eve of Kavanaugh's confirmation vote this weekend, Nadler said there was evidence that Senate Republicans and the FBI had overseen a "whitewash" investigation of the allegations and the legitimacy of the Supreme Court was at stake. Why are they voting again Saturday, and what happens after that?

Republican senator Lisa Murkowski will be the only member of her party to oppose the nominee.

As the clock ticked down to a final vote, Republican and Democratic senators continued to give floor speeches debating the nomination.

The Senate confirmed Kavanaugh with a 50-48 vote.

The anger among Kavanaugh's critics was evident on the steps of the Capitol where hundreds of protesters, many dressed in black garb, had gathered.

"Shame! Shame! Shame!" one of them screamed. Numerous protesters said they felt powerless but vowed that next month's midterms would change that.

As protesters in a Capitol Hill hallway shouted, "Shame!"

"I do not believe that these charges can fairly prevent Judge Kavanaugh from serving on the court", Collins said.

"I'm a patriot", another said.

Vice President Mike Pence, who was presiding over the vote, called on the sergeant-at-arms to restore order in the gallery, and the women were escorted out.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell told Reuters that the political brawl over Kavanaugh will help Republicans at the elections.

During the rally, the president also accused Democrats of supporting sanctuary cities and of wanting to strip funding from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The president praised Kavanaugh, calling him "a man of great character", while also condemning Democrats for their "disgraceful campaign" against him.

Demonstrators protest the appointment of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in Washington DC, on October 6, 2018.

Hours later, Kavanaugh was sworn in at a private ceremony.

In the case of Kavanaugh, even if the House did proceed to impeach him, it would take the consent of two-thirds of the Senate to remove him. Democrats are defending multiple seats in states Trump easily carried in that chamber.

"I have reservations about this vote given the serious accusations against Judge Kavanaugh and the temperament he displayed in the hearing", he wrote. Kavanaugh vigorously denied the allegations.

Democrats called the Federal Bureau of Investigation report a whitewash and said the White House placed constraints on the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which did not speak to many potential witnesses. But in recent days Trump changed tack, viewing an outcry over the last-minute allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh as a way to drive turnout.

Trump responded to the protesters in a tweet, calling the crowds "tiny". "These people are loco".

Manchin (D-W.V.) was seen as one of the possible swing votes on Kavanaugh, but on Friday he came out as the lone Democrat to support President Trump's pick for the high court. Kennedy, 81, retired after three decades in the middle of the court's ideological battles.
