Murkowski’s No Vote on Kavanaugh Shows High Pressure on Both Parties

She added, "This behavior revealed a hostility and a belligerence that is unbecoming of someone seeking to be elevated to the United States Supreme Court".

And Trump told Kansas rallygoers that he will hold a ceremonial swearing-in for Kavanaugh at the White House Monday evening.

A final confirmation vote is expected Saturday. The session was presided over by Pence. That balanced out the absence without affecting the outcome, and gave Kavanaugh the same two-vote margin he'd have received had both lawmakers voted.

That investigation is complete, and all reports indicate the FBI found no evidence to corroborate any of the allegations Kavanaugh's accusers brought. Two other women also accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct decades ago. Kavanaugh has denied all the charges.

Under pressure from wavering fellow Republicans, GOP leaders agreed to an extraordinary Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week that absorbed the nation as Ford nervously recounted her story and said she was "100 per cent" certain that Kavanaugh was her attacker.

The stylish former model also said she did not always agree with her husband's tweets and shared her opinions with him directly, even though he did not always follow her advice. Steyer, a major Democratic donor, has invested more than $210,000 on ads denouncing Kavanaugh.

A final confirmation vote is expected Saturday afternoon.

"My fervent hope is that Brett Kavanagh will work to lessen the divisions in the Supreme Court so that we have far fewer 5-4 decisions and so that public confidence in our judiciary and our highest court is restored", Collins said. "I'm glad that Dr. Ford was heard; I'm glad that Judge Kavanaugh was heard".

In final remarks just before the voting, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said a vote for Kavanaugh was "a vote to end this brief, dark chapter in the Senate's history and turn the page toward a brighter tomorrow".

But when asked whether she believed Ford, the first lady would not answer directly.

Pumping their fists and carrying signs, a few hundred people climbed the east steps of the Capitol for the demonstration.

"It is a handsome thing to see - and they are not paid professional protesters who are handed expensive signs". U.S. Capitol Police began arresting some of them.

Speaking after the vote, McConnell said the protests against Kavanaugh over the past several weeks have "turned our base on fire".

Even if Republicans were so inclined, it might indeed be hard for them to put women on the Judiciary Committee - not because women are lazy or incapable, but because Republican voters elect so few of them.

Senator Collins appeared to fall in line with Mr Trump's accusation that outside funding was being pumped into the process, as she slammed the "unprecedented amount of dark money opposing this nomination".

The Senate Judiciary Committee said the Federal Bureau of Investigation also interviewed two alleged eyewitnesses to the incident named by Ramirez and one of her college friends.

Murkowski lost a primary battle in 2010 but was re-elected as a write-in candidate.

Republicans control the Senate by a meager 51-49 margin, and announcements of support Friday from Republicans Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of ME, along with Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia, locked in the needed votes.

The lone Republican to oppose the nomination was Sen.

A demonstration was scheduled for Saturday outside Collins' office in Portland, Maine, to show opposition to her support of Kavanaugh.
