Redesigned Google Home app v2.6 now rolling out

Google Home Hub is all about simplifying the smart home experience

Google Home Hub is all about simplifying the smart home experience

Google has managed to use software tricks to compensate for all of the features enabled by dual-lens cameras on other phones. Want to watch a video? Curiously, that doesn't appear to be the case, as those smart displays run the Android Things OS, whereas the Google Home Hub is running on the Google Cast platform. Android Things (and Brillo before it) has always been an IoT OS that needs a lot more hardware than you would normally associate with IoT devices. Amazon's device has excellent speakers with booming bass - I could feel the table under it vibrating as it played music, and I would definitely use it at a party.

It comes in four colors: Charcoal, Aqua, Chalk, and Sand.

Consumers can control more than 10,000 products, such as lights, home heating, smart TVs, from more than 1,000 manufacturers via a single interface.

The $149 device is available for pre-order online from the Google store, and will go on sale at Best Buy, Target, Walmart and other retailers starting on October 22.

Google is taking a more global approach to the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL launch, announcing that it will now offer its new phones in 13 countries, including Japan, Ireland, Taiwan, and France. You can get weather reports, traffic reports, even access your Google gadgets (and control them), all in one handy spot. And photographers might appreciate that the device doubles as a smart picture frame and can cycle through your Google Photos albums as a screensaver.

Google has made a name for itself in the smart home market through Google Home, its smart artificial intelligence assistant.

Google, meanwhile, only has one camera on the Pixel range but it's often ranked as one of the best on any smartphone. The Echo Show has a camera, enabling calls to the Alexa app or another Echo device with a screen. And also the smart home products which can be integrated with its app. The support page also states that the users can now ask Google Home to read news about a particular topic for them. Two far-field microphones mean you can interact with the Home Hub hands-free. Both Amazon and JBL are hitting the market at $349 - and we gather JBL has brought that down significantly from its original estimate, perhaps to match Amazon and get closer to Google's Home Hub, which will sell in Australia at an attractive $219.

For the first time, smart bulbs can pair automatically by Bluetooth with Google Home devices and appear on your Google Home app without the middleman.
