US President Donald Trump told reporters earlier Monday that Saudi Arabia's king strongly denied any involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance.

The Saudi government is preparing to a release a report claiming that the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed as a result of a botched interrogation, CNN reported on Monday, citing two sources. Sources tell Fox News that President Trump has not been made aware of any pending report by the Saudi government.

Trump has said he probably will not cancel a $110 billion arms deal with the Saudi government because that could unnecessarily harm the U.S.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday "rogue killers" may have been behind the disappearance of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and despatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to meet King Salman over the case.

Reporters waiting outside the consulate in Istanbul's Levent district said early October 16 that Turkish crime scene investigators turned off all the lights and surveyed the interior of the Saudi consulate with a special blue light used in forensics probes.

The Saudi foreign ministry said King Salman affirmed his country's "solid" relations with Turkey in the phone call with Erdogan, stressing that no one could undermine their relationship. "And if that is the case, I do not believe the U.S. should continue to be party to supporting the Saudis in the bloodshed in Yemen - a halt that is long overdue given the humanitarian disaster resulting from that conflict", Durbin said.

Few details have emerged over how the joint working group will function, sparking suspicion that Saudi Arabia might be trying to coax Turkey with certain concessions at a time of the latter's economic problems.

Turkish officials now believe Khashoggi was most likely tortured and killed inside the consulate and then dismembered and his remains smuggled out of the building.

The Yemeni statement said Saudi Arabia was being targeted due to its "honourable and honest positions" towards a range of issues, particularly its role in combating "terrorism and extremism" fostered by Iran.

Khashoggi, who recently has been living in Virginia and writing columns for The Washington Post, hasn't been seen since October 2, when he entered the Saudi Consulate to handle paperwork for his upcoming marriage.

"And I do it, and I have, myself, received death threats and received a number of threats for doing basic things, just defending human rights in Saudi Arabia".

Until now, Riyadh has not allowed Turkish investigators to search the consulate - officially Saudi territory - with reports both sides were at odds over the conditions.

A team of cleaners were reported to have entered the consulate on Monday lunchtime - "causing a minor flurry of excitement", according to one reporter - hours before the search team showed up.

JPMorgan Chase & Co Chief Executive Jamie Dimon became the most high-profile banker to withdraw from the event on Sunday night.

Trump has not described what punishment Saudi Arabia might face.
