Musk says hyperloop test tunnel will open in December

Through his tunnel-digging firm, the Boring Co., Musk envisions the construction of a zero-emissions underground transit system that transports people using high-speed electric sleds.

Musk tweeted on Monday (NZT) that his aspiring underground transportation project would open its first test tunnel in Hawthorne, south of the city's global airport. Festivities to mark the occasion include an opening event on the night of December 10 and free rides for the public the next day, Musk tweeted.

In a series of tweets Sunday, Musk said the tunnel is nearly complete and there will be an opening event on the night of December 10 and free rides for the public the next day.

Musk also added that the top speed in the test tunnel would reach 250 km/h (155 mph) and that following the opening event there would be a whole day of free rides.

In a presentation in Los Angeles in May, Musk said vehicles could reach downtown LA from its worldwide airport in under 10 minutes, with a long-term objective of reaching over 300 miles an hour. Existing Chicago trains take about 40-45 minutes to travel that same route. A lot of details remain unknown, but The Boring Company's ultimate goal is to build a high-speed underground public transportation system known as the Loop.

Elon Musk claims Twitter temporarily locked his account after fearing his freaky posts were the work of hackers.

The Test Tunnel, as it's called, is the first leg of Musk's underground tunnel system located underneath the streets of Hawthorne, California. Musk replied, "I think real".
