Passenger Plane Missing Minutes After Take Off From Jakarta Search On

An Indonesian Lion Air plane carrying 188 passengers and crew crashed into the sea on Monday, moments after it had asked to be allowed to return to Jakarta.

The Boeing 737-800 jet was scheduled to land at Depati Amir Airport in Pangkal Pinang, an island off Sumatra, at 7:10 a.m. local time.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said in a press conference at the airport that the National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) was investigating the cause of the crash while the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) was still searching for the aircraft and any survivors. "We are trying to dive down to find the wreck".

Indonesian officials have begun a search for the 189 Lion Air survivors that include one child, two babies, two pilots, and six flight attendants, The Australian reported.

Debris of the plane, including seats, have been found floating in the Java sea near the facility belonging to Indonesia's state oil firm Pertamina, a company official told Reuters.

TRT World spoke with Alex Macheras, an aviation analyst, who explained more about the plane, a very new Boeing 737 MAX 8, and possible problems investigators will look into.

At the National Search and Rescue Agency headquarters in Jakarta, family members turned up, hoping desperately for news.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia's youngest and biggest airlines, flying to dozens of domestic and global destinations.

Suneja had joined the Lion Air in March 2011 where he flies the Boeing 737, reported Times of India. Investigators are focused on recovering the plane's so-called "black box", which is created to record cockpit voice audio and flight data that could prove invaluable in determining what happened aboard flight JT610.

Distraught relatives are praying for a miracle as they wait for information on their relatives on doomed Lion Air flight JT-610.

The EU permitted Lion Air and two other Indonesian airlines, Citilink and Batik Air, in June 2016.

The SAR has deployed boats, helicopter and 130 rescuers, including teams from three cities including Jakarta, Bandung and Lampung to the vicinity of the crash site in the Java Sea, 34 nautical miles off the coast near Jakarta. The transport ministry said crisis centres have been set up Pangkal Pinang's airport and Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport.

How is Lion Air's safety record?

Indonesia's Ministry of Finance confirmed, in turn, that there were 20 government officials on board the aircraft.
