Ninth child dies following viral outbreak at New Jersey health care facility

A ninth child has died in a New Jersey rehabilitation facility that is now suffering an adenovirus outbreak, according to officials.

Seven other children have died and 16 others who have survived all contracted adenovirus while being treated at the Wanaque Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Haskell, according to the Department of Health.

The teen - who has been a longterm care patient at the facility for four years - was apparently diagnosed with the virus several days before the NJ Health Department was notified of the outbreak, the WABC article says.

In the same report, the New Jersey spokeswoman Nicole Kirgan said children are particularly at risk with this virus. The department said later Monday there have been 26 adenovirus cases confirmed at the center.

A staff member at the facility also fell ill during the outbreak, but has since recovered. Among the 25 children sickened, nine have died, the Health Department said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is assisting with the outbreak at the facility, and the Department of Health Communicable Disease Service is on site as well.

Adenoviruses make up about 5 to 10 percent of fevers in young children.

The viruses themselves are also "resistant to many common disinfectants and can remain infectious for long periods on environmental surfaces and medical instruments", the CDC says.

This strain of adenovirus has been associated with communal living.

"Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face", she previously told CNN.

The infections "usually occur sporadically - here a case, there a case - so outbreaks are pretty rare", Schaffner said. He said this is changing, and for that reason, he believes the number of cases will rise.

"People know patients are being held prisoner, but they probably think they have bigger battles in public health to fight, so they just have to let this go", Sophie Harman, a global health expert at Queen Mary University of London, said.

"They cause principally a whole bunch of minor troublesome infections spread by children, often from children to adults", he said.
