Mohammed bin Salman 'told White House' Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist

LONDON-A month after the killing of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi, the Trump administration has chose to stand by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, having concluded that he is nearly certain to retain his grip on power despite a growing global consensus that he bears responsibility for the killing, officials familiar with the deliberations said.

"The tragic and unjustified" slaying of Khashoggi "is the theme of today's onslaught and demonization of Saudi Arabia in the same fashion as the previous crises".

Turkish officials appear to have dismissed a theory that Jamal Khashoggi's body was given to a mystery local collaborator in Istanbul.

The CHP leader was referring to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the Saudi Consulate General to Istanbul, who left Turkey a few days after the disappearance of the journalist.

Khashoggi's family rejected the characterization in a statement to the newspaper. "He denied such claims repeatedly over the past several years", the family said.

He entered the consulate to sort out documents for his marriage to his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

Pompeo told a local radio station in St Louis that the USA had "deep and long-term strategic relationships" with Saudi Arabia and said "we intend to make sure that those relationships remain intact".

The United States will hold responsible not only those who carried out the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi but also those who led to it or were connected to it, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino told reporters on Thursday.

Turkey, for its part, said Khashoggi was strangled the moment he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, the city's chief prosecutor said on Wednesday, adding that it was a premeditated murder. He denounced what he called "the demonization of Saudi Arabia".

U.S. activists have launched a petition, calling for a section of road near the Saudi embassy in Washington to be renamed Jamal Khashoggi Way.

"It'll take us probably a handful more weeks before we have enough evidence to actually put those sanctions in place, but I think we'll be able to get there", he said on Thursday, adding that President Donald Trump had vowed accountability for all involved in the "heinous crime".

On Wednesday, France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Khashoggi's death was a "crime" and "odious".

"The victim's body was dismembered and destroyed following his death by suffocation", the statement said.

During the call, Salman stressed the importance of maintaining a US-Saudi Alliance.
