For the first time in his fledgeling managerial career, Lampard will be in the opposition dugout against the club where he won 11 major trophies - including three Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Incredibly, this wasn't to be the end of Derby County's bad-luck. His forward runs were just as risky to Chelsea as to the opponents; both visiting goals came from the space vacated on his flank.

Chelsea supporters greeted their record goalscorer, now a mere opponent rather than an enemy, with such unadulterated adoration that this lively Carabao Cup fourth-round tie felt like a footnote to the love-in.

The breathless action continued thereafter, with Lampard's effusive side clawing back parity once again as Martyn Waghorn sprinted in to tap a low Mason Mount (also on loan from Chelsea) cross home from close range, all inside the first half-an-hour.

The Nigerian born player put through his own net yet still impressed in the five-goal thriller.

Mount and Tomori are both on loan from Chelsea and Zola enjoyed the duo's performances. He showed frustration at the goals his team conceded but, true to his word, declined to celebrate the ones they scored, settling instead for a silent, satisfied swig of water.

"Certainly Frank's got something to do with that [Chelsea allowing Mount and Tomori to play against them in the EFL Cup]", Nicholson told Rams TV.

Speaking after Chelsea's win over Derby, the playmaker admitted he would be keen to remain at the West London club.

Chelsea's loanees were involved in goals at both ends. I thought they played really well today.

And it proved to be the victor as the upright denied David Nugent late on and left Blues legend Lampard to contemplate the unusual feeling of a Stamford Bridge defeat.

Furthermore, the English midfielder has managed four goals in those two games, including a hat-trick against BATE at Stamford Bridge last week.

The last time these two sides met, Chelsea emerged victorious with a 3-1 win at Pride Park in the League Cup in 2014.

Chelsea have been drawn at home to Bournemouth in a repeat of last season's quarter-final.

The Italian concluded: "At first it wasn't showing it, because he was very much involved in learning tactically what the team needs him to do".

Lampard set up Derby County in a 4-5-1 against Maurizio Sarri's standard 4-3-3.

It will be the Blues' third match in the space of six days, having beaten BATE Borisov and Burnley in the Europa League and Premier League respectively.
