Android apps will update while you're using them

You've tried power banks and even fast chargers to negate its impact, but turns out Google had a trick up its sleeve that they have now revealed.

It's less than a year since Google launched Files Go, its first attempt at a file manager app for Android.

"But this isn't just about that". But battery life is never enough, especially as the battery degrades over time.

Google shared data about energy consumption on phones at this week's Android Dev Summit, SlashGear reports. This makes sense, since OLED displays feature individual pixels that barely do any work on dark areas of the screen. We think so simply because it looks like you have to actively seek out the update, instead of having a pop up appear on your screen.

Another interesting tidbit from the session is that using Night Mode to filter out some of the blue light during the late hours can actually reduce power draw by as much as 63%, so it's good for your eyes and your phone's battery. When an OLED screen displays black, it doesn't really display anything.

Google also showed a comparison between the original Pixel and the iPhone 7 which is self-explanatory, as long as you're aware of the screen differences between the two devices. While white uses up the most power, black used up the least amount. This can save up to 43% battery usage during video playback and 60% when paused (with the phone set to 100% brightness). If you crank brightness on your phone, a damn dark theme on your keyboard could save you 21%. I don't think you need to me to tell you, but Google admitting that they've probably wrongly been pushing developers towards overuse of white was something to see. Android Pie is more thoughtfully designed than past versions of the platform, and Google's interface design is coming together on app and service at a time. The official Google Dialer, Messaging, News, and YouTube apps all have configurable dark modes now.
