Australia: One dead in Melbourne multiple stabbing attack

The lone terrorist who fatally stabbed a man in busy Bourke St on Friday planned to cause an explosion in central Melbourne by igniting gas cylinders in his auto, police say.

The 30-year-old planned to cause an explosion by igniting gas cylinders in his vehicle, police said. One of the victims also died and the two others were admitted to hospital.

Australian Federal Police acting deputy commissioner Ian McCartney said the terrorism threat had been mitigated and it was limited to the lone attacker. Shire Ali died in hospital.

Speaking on the Today Show , he said Khalif's auto contained gas cylinders and it is believed he meant to cause an explosion.

- Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.

"It looks like he's attempted to ignite a fire in the vehicle, we believe at this stage with a view to igniting those canisters with some sort of explosion, but that didn't eventuate", Ashton told Australia's Channel 9 TV network.

If it weren't for the heavy police presence and the TV news crews, a passerby at Bourke Street on Saturday morning might have no clue to the horror that unfolded here less than 24 hours ago.

"But he wasn't someone we were actively monitoring to that level".

Eyewitness said they first heard a loud explosion when the auto burst into flames but later saw the man attacking a few passerby. "When a firearm is the last resort, they're (police are) trained to shoot to kill, shoot to the body mass".

Police said Shire Ali's Australian passport was canceled in 2015 after an intelligence report he planned to travel to Syria, but an assessment was made that while he had radical views, he posed no threat to national security.

Commissioner Ashton also says there was no suggestion that Khalif was inspired by James "Dimitrious" Gargasoulas, who is now on trial facing six charges of murder after allegedly mowing down pedestrians in January 2017. She then turned around to see a vehicle on fire.

Mr Ashton said the counter-terrorism unit was investigating and he couldn't name the attacker but he revealed he'd come to Australia from Somalia in the 1990s, lived in Melbourne's northwest and was known to police through relatives who were persons of interest.

Ashton also detailed the timeline of the attack, which took place in Melbourne's busy central business district.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement released on Twitter: "Australia will never be intimidated by these appalling attacks".

The mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp, posted a message of support after the attack. He at that time produced a knife and attempted to attack the police officers.

"This is an evil and terrifying thing that has happened", Victoria State Premier Daniel Andrews said.

Warning text messages were sent after the attack and police sealed off the downtown area, usually busy with shoppers and diners on a Friday evening.

Streets around the crime scene would remain cordoned off until 8am on Saturday, Mr Ashton said.

According to the Herald Sun, Khalif's 21-year-old brother, Ali Khalif Shire Ali, was arrested in November of 2017 in relation to a foiled terror attack in Melbourne.
